DECREATION - MARK ARMIJO MCKNIGHT
24 AUG, 2024- 05 JAN, 2025
Mark Armijo McKnight: Decreation features new and recent black-and-white photographs by Mark Armijo McKnight (b. 1984, Los Angeles, California; lives in New York, New York) and focuses on his ongoing body of work, “Decreation.” The concept, originated by the French philosopher, activist, and mystic Simone Weil (1909–1943), describes an intentional undoing of the self, a process Armijo McKnight explores in images of bodies and landscapes in intermediate states, such as anonymous nude figures engaged in erotic play amidst harsh environments. These photographs convey a sense of both ecstasy and affliction. A new 16mm film in the gallery plays a cacophonous symphony of gradually unwinding metronomes set within the dramatic geological formations of the Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in New Mexico. Two large limestone sculptures, which double as seating, suggest the forms of a pair of ancient sundials. As a whole, Decreation simultaneously evokes tumult and quietude, darkness and light, isolation and togetherness. Discover more

OUT OF COUNTRY - MARK GROTJAHN
10 SEPT - 19 OCT, 2024
Gagosian is pleased to announce Out of Country, an exhibition of new and recent paintings by Mark Grotjahn at the gallery’s 980 Madison Avenue location in New York. Opening on September 10, Out of Country represents the culmination of the Backcountry series that has occupied the artist since 2021, and features never before exhibited paintings on white grounds, alongside a single black-ground painting. In his paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, Grotjahn investigates color, perspective, seriality, and the sublime. The concluding entries in the Backcountry series featured in this exhibition see him again draw inspiration from the experience of rural American landscapes, specifically those from his ski and fly-fishing tours in the remote backcountry of western Colorado. While the works contain an element of pictorial representation, hinting at a snowy mountain descent or starlit nocturnal pass, their primary commitment is still to abstraction, specifically the nuanced layering of line, tone, and texture. Continuing to produce variations on an identifiable style and format, Grotjahn builds on a dynamic rhythm that transcends simple visual record to achieve a unique formal and emotional complexity.

THE ART OF PLACE - DARIA DOROSH
07 SEPT - 06 OCT, 2024
In The Art of Place, Daria Dorosh sets the stage for collaborative play by inviting each visitor to activate her transparent constructions with their cell phone flashlight. The action initiates a burst of color and form that can be experienced, but not held. In order to capture their process as an image, visitors must rely on a third collaborator to take the picture. Furthermore, if the gallery visitor chooses not to participate, there is no art to see.

CITY ECOLOGY - SUI PARK
THROUGH FALL 2024
City Ecology by NY-based artist Sui Park is an installation of 32 site-specific sculptures commissioned by the Hudson Yards Hell’s Kitchen Alliance (HYHK) for Bella Abzug Park. For this exhibition, Park gives texture and shape to the colourful stories, dynamic relationships, and complex patterns of connection that she observes within New York City and amongst its residents, and she places those forms within the landscape of a public green space. The sculptures are carefully constructed using cable ties, an inexpensive and mass-produced industrial material. When woven together, Park creates seemingly organic, biomorphic shapes that both complement and contrast with the natural environment. She arranges them in clusters within Bella Abzug Park. These groupings represent the countless communities and hubs of activity that define high-density urban life and that lend New York City, in particular, its long-standing resilience and beauty.
