LIGHT - RAFAËL ROZENDAAL
@THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART 16 NOV, 2024 - SPRING 2025 The Museum of Modern Art announces Light: Rafaël Rozendaal, an immersive digital artwork, on view from November 16, 2024 through Spring 2025 on the Hyundai Card Digital Wall in MoMA’s Agnes Gund Garden Lobby. This installation presents a selection of Rozendaal’s vibrant animated works, each sampled for two to three minutes. Each work originates as a storyboard sketched on paper, which is then translated into code of only a few kilobytes (the exhibition’s total file size is 135 KB). The resulting final form is an autonomous website powered by that algorithm, generating the animation in real time. Light: Rafaël Rozendaal is organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, and Director, Research and Development, and Amanda Forment, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design. WEAVING NARRATIVES
@FRIEDRICHS PONTONE GALLERY 07 MAR - 30 MAR, 2025 Friedrichs Pontone is delighted to present Weaving Narratives, a group exhibition in celebration of Women’s History Month 2025. Weaving Narratives brings together eleven artists, highlighting their artistic similarities and examining their differences. Each artist works to portray their own observations, personal experiences, and insights, metaphorically ‘weaving’ their narratives together. The presentation is heavily rooted in identity; while some works directly engage with gender, race, and class, others are more personally understated and reflective. Uniting all in their individuality, Weaving Narratives establishes a dynamic joining of varying mediums and colors, along with unique methods of symbolism and messaging.

GRAY DAYS, ORANGE WAYS - XIANGHAN CHENG
@A SPACE GALLERY 06 MAR - 19 MAR, 2025
A Space Gallery is pleased to present Gray Days, Orange Ways, a solo exhibition by New York-based Chinese artist Xianghan Cheng. Showcasing a series of oil paintings inspired by urban walls, the exhibition explores layers, textures, and color relationships to engage with visual memory. Cheng’s artistic process is rooted in his fascination with the unnoticed details of city streets—weathered surfaces, overlapping layers of paint, and traces left behind by time. His visual language is categorized into three levels: Light Coverage, where colors are distilled into a grayscale foundation with subtle warm and cool tones; Medium Coverage, where remnants of previous layers remain visible; and Heavy Coverage, where all recognizable elements are concealed, leaving only the interplay of texture and color. Through this exploration, Cheng captures the evolving essence of urban landscapes, transforming overlooked details into compelling visual narratives.

THE GATES
12 FEB - 23 MAR, 2025
The installation in Central Park was completed with the blooming of the 7,503 fabric panels on February 12, 2005. The 7,503 gates were 4.87 meters (16 feet) tall and varied in width from 1.68 to 5.48 meters (5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet) according to the 25 different widths of walkways, on 37 kilometers (23 miles) of walkways in Central Park. Free hanging saffron colored fabric panels, suspended from the horizontal top part of the gates, came down to approximately 2.1 meters (7 feet) above the ground. The gates were spaced at 3.65 meter (12 foot) intervals, except where low branches extended above the walkways. The gates and the fabric panels could be seen from far away through the leafless branches of the trees. The work of art remained for 16 days, then the gates were removed and the materials recycled.
